Meet Ernest, awarded for connecting diverse communities through sport at Belgravia Leisure

Ernest Kulauzović, Community Engagement Specialist at Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre, has been recognised with the Inclusion and Diversity in Sport Award at the 2025 Cumberland City Council Mayoral Sports Awards for strengthening connections between sport and the diverse communities of Western Sydney.

The award was presented by Cumberland City Council Mayor Ola Hamed, recognising the work of Ernest and the Auburn Ruth Everuss team in building strong community partnerships and supporting Belgravia Leisure’s commitment to inclusive participation in sport.

“I’m honoured to receive this award. Community engagement is about ensuring everyone, regardless of background or ability, has a place in our local sporting community. Thank you to our team, our partners and the Cumberland community for supporting this work,” Ernest said.

Ernest connects the venue with local community groups, health organisations and cultural leaders, helping ensure swimming is seen not only as a sport, but as a vital life skill that is safe and accessible for everyone.

A recent initiative led by Ernest highlights the role aquatic venues can play in community health. Earlier this year the venue partnered with Western Sydney Diabetes and Western Sydney Local Health District to deliver ‘Dive In for Diabetes’, combining free swimming with on-site diabetes screening to support early detection and community awareness.

Venue Manager Ben Dunley, who nominated Ernest for the award, said Ernest’s work has strengthened relationships with the many communities across Cumberland.

“Ernest is an incredible bridge between our venue and the diverse communities we serve. Through strong partnerships and cultural understanding, Ernest continues to create opportunities for more people to access aquatic education and water safety,” Ben said.

The recognition builds on Ernest’s ongoing community work across South-West and Western Sydney, including receiving the NSW Government Community Service Award in 2024 and supporting partnerships with organisations such as the Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council to expand inclusive programs and opportunities for local communities.

Belgravia Leisure is committed to fostering inclusive communities through social inclusion, ensuring everyone can participate in facilities, programs, services and employment.
